bmw steering rack 98/'328i

not to much talk about steering racks on here ---------I suspect my steering rack is going bad ------this just started happening ,it feels like its binding on turns, more when making right turns, but its not a steady binding it gets tight and then loosens up as you turn wheel .The pump fluid is toped off, I jacked the car up and disconnected the tie rods, and checked each wheel ,they turn normally no binding ,my question is could it be the universal on the steering shaft were it connects to the rack ? car has 110 k miles --anyone have any experience with the steering rack???? thanks............................................ ...........................

Smile bmw steerng rack

I can answer my own question,I was back under the car today and on further inspection, I find steering shaft upper universal was binding .I put the front of the car on jackstands and oiled the universal, then turned the steering wheel back and forth ,re- oiled it couple of times and the binding went away.I don't see nothing loose ,so ill keep it lubricated and see if it works out ------------or i'll have to replace the shaft............................................. .........

The steering on my 323is recently started having a heavy feel to it - this happened after the car sat for a week unused. I suspected that maybe the universal joint you alluded to might be the culprit since the fluid was full and the power-steering pump wasn't making any unusual noises. After driving it for a few miles the heaviness went away, but came back after sitting for a couple of days. Is there any other issue that could cause this heaviness to the steering?
