1992 E36 vacum Line Location

I purchased a 1992 325i a few months ago. It has a few problems however I spent most of my life as a German car mechanic so I know more than enough to get me in trouble. I noticed the vacuum actuator on the tail pipe, but there was not a vacuum hose attached. I can't seem to fine the vacuum pipe where the hose should be coming from. Also I can't seem to locate in the engine compartment where the vacuum source originates. I know this is a leak because it is not plugged off. Can someone give me a hint where to look for this pipe.
