Changing stereo such a headache???

Hi, I have a 1998 328is with the stock stereo and 6 disc change in the trunk.

I went to the stereo shop to find a car stereo that plays mp3/cd-r/cd-rw and they said that a wiring harness to hook up the 6 speakers (since all the stereos are just 4 channel), costs $59 which sounds kind of expensive, but said they would do the install for free though for the headunit and wiring harness (which is normally $40).

And that they can't connect the headunit to the factory cd changer due to the plug being different. Is that right?

Abc.
Have you considered getting something from Crutchfield? They are usually pretty good about things like this.

Consider eliminating the BMW factory amplifier when you replace the head unit. I was easily able to do that on my '93 for the rear channels when I installed an Alpine head unit and 6x9's in the back, but haven't yet done so for the front, because it requires a passive three-channel filter that I haven't yet purchased.

The other approach many recommend is to replace your front 3-way speakers and eliminate the mid-range driver.

I suspect the advice is correct about the BMW CD changer, but maybe the site that Patron69 identified can help.

I've never really missed my changer since the Alpine CD-player head was installed (which made a huge improvement).
