E30 Wipers Inop

So, the rain started again here in the Northwest, and my wipers just quit working. The car is a 1984 325e. I pulled the wiper control module from the fuse box and placed a different one from my 1988 325is, and the wipers still do not work. Can anyone steer me to the next step in diagnosing the problem?

Thanks,

Bob

Bob,
Are all fuses and relays associated with your windshield wipers OK?

Try pulling the module and checking for voltage on the +12 V contact with the ignition in accessory or on. If you don't get battery voltage, you've got a wiring problem. Then, try (with the module still removed) jumpering the terminals for fast/slow to the +12 V (make the connections with the ignition off, then turn on to check). If you don't get any motion, then it's either the motor or wiring to the motor.

If you did get the wipers moving, then it's prob the switch. Check that by using a multimeter from ground to each of the contacts (ignition off) with the switch in each position. The connection is under the steering column.

OK, This is helpful... thank you. The jump connectors work, so now I'm on to the switch... I'll be checking it soon. Thanks. Bob

OK, So using the Bentley manual, page 15-28, I checked the continuity of the ground wire, as shown in figure 8-4, using a multimeter. I got resistance, so I simply removed the screw and placed the washer behind the wire connector, then screwed it back tight. I then rechecked for resistance, and found there to be none!
Wipers work perfectly fine now! Simple as that.

Thanks for the help folks.

Bob
