I need a quick answer if it is possible because I have to get back to a guy shortly if I am to purchase this '85 for parts.
I need to know if the engine, transmission and rear of a 1985 325i coupe will go into my 1989 325i Convertible? Thanks for all your help in advance. Sandy

Yes. However the 85 is an eta (2.7l m20b27) and your 89 is a 2.5l (m20b25).

Keith,
Thank you for your reply, but can you put that in plan English? I only know how to put oil in an engine. I hate to admit that, but it is true. I've been looking for a used engine, tranny and rear for an '89 325i convertible that I purchased to fix my '89 325i automatics tranny in the fall. Now I want to get the convertible running so I need "STUFF" for that now and don't know what years and models are compatible.

no no no no...don't waste your money. The parts car is a 325e, your convertible is a 325i. Although the engine will technically bolt in, alot of parts would be incompatible - fuel system components, even the ECU. The "E" engine is considerably less powerful, it's rated around 120hp while an "I" engine is around 170hp. Basically, you would be downgrading the whole car. It would also be worth next to nothing in resale value, a BMW fan can tell an E motor from an I motor just by looking.
