2.5L non-vanos vs. vanos

Hi Guys - I need help please. Just bought a '93 325i with a bazzillion miles on it (193k), it runs like it has 70K, but not sure for how long? I've rebuilt many high-perf. Chysler V8s, Trans, etc. I want to purchase a lower mile 2.5L long block and methodically zero-time it in my shop. There is a guy down the road selling a '92 2.5L out of a non-vanos 325i auto (mine is a 5-speed). the price is super and it has 100k on it. Can I use the block, crank, rods in my car? What about putting this engine in all together (non-vanos). I'm guessing I'd need a '92 325i DME?? Will the auto trans crank work with my 5-speed?? Should I wait and find the correct '93 2.5L? Any help much appreciated......

The VANOS system is just the variable timing deal, with VANOS you get some more pep at higher RPMs, that's all in the head.

Hi Dustn525 - Thanks for replying - I was thinking nobody ever would!! I'm pretty much checked-out on the operation of the Vanos sys (I hope I don't sound like a smart A$$), but what I need to know is:

1) Will my Vanos Cylinder head bolt-up to a non-vanos (1 year earlier) 2.5L?

2) Can I bolt the complete '92 2.5L (non-Vanos) in my Vanos ECU car and expect it to run w/o problems?

3) Are the any considerations to running a standard trans behind a factory auto trans crank (I.e. engine balancing, pilot bearing recepticle, etc)?

I like the idea of using an earlier/simpler engine in my car (rated at same HP figure as the '93 and w/o the vanos). I chipped my car last weekend and it pulls/runs great - just want to be ready for that "bad day" when the current mill expires.

Lovin' my BMW!! Just want to learn much, much more. Any help out there???

I know that you do need a non-vanos ECU, and the cranks are the same. The ECUs for auto and manual cars are different. Not sure about the cylinder head. Another awesome site to check out is Bimmerforums.com
