not enough sealant under valve cover

Hi all. I recently replaced my valve cover gasket in my '95 325iC, which went quite smoothly. However, I apparently didn't use enough sealant when closing things back up, and there's now a bit of oil leaking out at the front of the cover! Would it be ok just to go back in and throw more sealant around without replacing the gasket itself again? Or will the gasket be messed up by tearing things apart?

BTW, I used Permatex high-temp RTV silicone gasket maker 26B. Is there something else that would be better for this job?

Thanks for any input.

Hi - is it possible you've over tightened the valve cover to pull it out of shape slightly?
I would take it off, clean it up and re-apply everything and see how it goes.
Cheers
Richard

I WOULD TAKE IT OFF AGAIN. WHEN YOU PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AGAIN THERE IS NO NEED FOR ANY SEALANT EXCEPT WHERE THE TIMING CASE MEETS THE HEAD. I AM TALKING THE SIZE OF HALF A DIME AND JUST AT THE TWO SPOTS. AND THAT WILL SEAL IT PROPERLY

Yeah, I'll dive back in there after this latest winter storm passes. At the time I did this job (about a month ago) I didn't yet own a torque wrench, so it's certainly possible that I over-tightened the bolts. But now I'm better equipped, and so should be able to do it right this time.

Also, forgot to mention earlier, I'd also switched to synthetic oil around that time, so I imagine that only contributes to the propensity of the system to leak...

Thanks for the input so far!

btw,

if using rtv plus new-gasket combo, use only a little bit, it goes a long way, make a bead on either side, smooth it out with your finger so there are no high spots, and torque in stages (finger tight, snug, torqued), maybe even a little less torque as rtv works best when not so tight that all material is squeezed out and has a chance to form a good bond.

my e30 has these 4 "doghouse" looking rubber plugs on the head that have to be r/r when doing gasket, not sure if the e36 is the same
