steering lock assembly e30

anybody out there know how to remove the ignition tumbler from the steering lock assembly WHEN the lock assembly is locked internally? e.g. key doesn't turn.

happened to me the other day, spent an hour shimmying and turning the key to unlock the wheel just to remove it and all the column guts. eventually removed the steering wheel locking mechanism thinking i could live without a lock. put everything back together, turn the key to off and "click", it locks internally i guess too.

everything i read says to turn the key to the "acc" position and put a coat hanger through a hole and release it. but what about when the key won't even turn to the "acc" position? any ideas?

guess i'll be starting it with a screwdriver until the dealer comes back with the coded tumbler/lock assembly. oh well.
