Unhappy 328i E36 M52 engine - scrap?

Hi Folks

Been reading this for a while and get great tips - thanks!

My '95 328i has just gone horribly wrong! The engine started making a noise that sounded like a wheel bearing whining. Not long afterwards, it started to run a bit rough, then I got an amazing grey/blue smoke trail from the exhaust. Stopped and got towed home.

The coolant reservoir was empty so I topped it up the next day. Oil was normal with no contamination. The engine starts easily, but I get the smoke. Decided to drive it to my friends place, one mile away - it used nearly all the oil and gave a great smoke display. Spark plugs look pretty oily and black. The whining noise sounds like pressure being released and stops when I open the oil cap or dipstick. Piston rings?

Sounds pretty terminal to me, but after 206,000 miles I'm not too sad! I'm pretty broke, so if anyone has any ideas on this I'd love to hear them! Scrap or swap the motor???

Thanks,

Eric

Everyone's definition of "broke" is different...
My first thought was: Yeah, time for an M3 motor swap. They can had for ~$3k. Pull out M52's can be found for about half that, give or take, depending on the condition.
Rebuilds on BMW motors are PRICEY!! I'd look for a swap candidate if you love your car.
Good luck,
Russ
