M40 lifter replacement

Greetings,

I just received my box with my new hydraulic lifters for my 1991 BMW 316i (euro only). Unfortunately, my Bentley's manual doesn't really cover swapping the lifters for this engine. Has anyone out there ever done this? If so, is there an easy way? For instance, can it be done without removing the head from the engine? Has anyone been able to swap out the lifters by only compressing that valve spring at Bottom Dead Center, without removing the rocker arms or shaft?
