Question E21 Oil pan gasket replacement

I have a 1981 BMW 318i . I need to know if the procedures for the removal of the oil pan exactly the same as the E30 318i,(ie. the entire front suspension has to be remove, steering rack etc...) in order to replace the gasket. Regards Erich.

Erich,
I am not exactly sure about the E21's, as I am not familiar with them. On my E30, however, I just had to remove the 2 bolts securing the steering rack and then shift it out of the way. Then I raised the engine about 3 or 4 inches with a hoist. That gave me enough clearance at the bottom to maneuver inside the oil pan to drop the the oil pump into the pan. With the oil pump out of the way I was able to slide the oil pan forward and out.
I did not have to remove any suspension components.
I hope this helps.
