Oil Consumption 328i

Hello,

I have been noticing oil consumption has increased on my 1998 328i with 176k on the clock. It appears after a clean change I'm down about 1 1/2 to 2 qts. of oil 1500 miles in. It doesn't appear to be burning out the exhaust but it is definately going somewhere. Does anyone have any ideas where to look?

Thanks,
Wally

I fits not leaking id say it getting to the combustion chamber though worn valve guides or rings or into the intake through the cyclone separator.

I'd replace the cyclone separator if it has 176k on it.

Although that is high consumption I think it is still within BMW spec. You could do a compression test. Either way though if the cyclone separator doesn't fix it it will be best to live with it or sell it.

Engine running, pull the dip stick, if RPM drops drastically or engine dies it is bad. If RPM stays relatively steady it is probably good.

Cyclone Seperator?!?!? What's the function/location of this oddity? I have that symptom, but didn't know it was a symptom. When I pull the dipstick with Engine running, RPM drops then settles. Is that normal or bad?

I didn't know of this cyclone seperator either but it almost sounds as though it performs similar to a PCV valve which will show oil loss. As for the answer to your question, I would say by what I was reading if the rpm's drop signifcantly or you stall replace it. I would think since your rpm initially dropped but maintained consistant levels following you are ok. I'm leaning towards valve seals on mine. If you notice more smoke from the exhaust in morning startup and it disipates after running at warmer temperature its usually valve seals. W e won't go with the whole oil seeping past the worn ring senario. Removing the head is enough work.

The Cyclone Separator is BMW's version of the PCV valve.

At 176k with an oil consumption problem I would just replace it. It's about $60. I didn't think it was hard at all but others have complained they thought the job was tough.
