noise in rear of 96 328IS

I'M HOPING I'M L@@KING AT A DEAD/NOISY AXLE BEARING IN THE ' REAR TRAILING ARM!

i've printed off the rear axle bearing post. NO MENTION OF ANY SPECIAL
TOOLS! can i safely ASSUME this 'chore' can be 'accomplished' in my driveway?
the narrative and looking at the exploded view---'i have arrived at the conclusion'--- push the axle out of the bearing w/ a puller, remove the snap-
ring, drive the old bearing out of the trailing arm and drive the replacement bearing into place, pull the axleshaft thru the bearing and re-assemble, 'reverse of the dis-assembly'--- AM I GETTING THE WHOLE PICTURE?

thanx----red---- a.k.a. larry

I've never done a wheel bearing, but I expect too soon because as soon as someone asks about something I haven't done that same part fails on my car.

All I've heard about bearing replacement is you need a big breaker bar to get the nut loose.

I have done them several times to e30 and e36. Getting the stub shaft out can be a real problem. The splines on the stub shaft are tapered, when you tighten the shaft nut it pulls it into the bearing. I use a stub shaft puller. (its actually a press). it bolts to the hub and pushes the shaft out. Other than that its not too bad.

Mission Accomplished!

NOT A JOB FOR THE FAINT OF HEART--- or on-the-driveway! WITHOUT A HOIST AND PRESS i would have been on-the-job more than the EIGHT HOURS it took to complete the CHORE!
admittedly replacing the driver's side WITHOUT removing the exhaust system
is the MOST DIFFICULT side! [my advice do both sides at same time, passenger side is my near future 'chore.']
MITCHELL-ON-DEMAND estimator qoutes both sides at 5 hours, PELICAN PARTS rates the 'chore' as 6 out of 10----real world without the BMW specific on-the-car tools, figger to start EARLY and finish LATE! much LATER!
this is my son's car, his word's----either i buy a newer BMW next time or one with the 'mileage-specific-repairs ALREADY DOCUMENTED/COMPLETED!
I'VE DRIVEN 240 VOLVOS FOR MANY YEARS, BY-COMPARISON THEY'RE MUCH EASIER TO WORK ON!
