Passenger side interior water leak

How's it going everybody. I have a little problem with my '87 325IS. This past weekend, it rained pretty good here in Phoenix, and the car sat out the whole time. I got in it today and pulled some important papers up out of the passenger's side floor and they were absolutely SOAKED! After a few choice words and taking out a few things, I have that side of the carpet propped up and drying out as I type. Unfortunately, thanks to that spongy insulation, it'll probably take a while. I looked around for signs of where the water could be coming from, but have found nothing. The window was up, the pop out window in the back has never been opened as far as I know, and there are no traces of water around the sunroof (which hardly gets opened-motor's going bad). Any ideas out there? I'd appreciate them.

check the seal at the bottom of your windshield. I had that happen on a e36 325is and it was from a rotted cowl seal at the bottom of the windshield.

This might be a stupid question but.....Would that be the window seal itself, or a seal below it?

on mine I had to replace the whole cowl. $69 or something on pelican. The water wasn't the worst of it on mine though. It also drowned my ecu. That was a bad day. Good luck.

Group,

There is a drain from the wiper cowl located in the engine bay on the passenger side. It is a 3 inch long 1 inch wide rather flat looking rubber piece w/ a round opening that attaches to the firewall to the right rear of the cyl. head near the trans tunnel & battery tray. Pull it off & clean it out, it's probably full of muck, causing water to back up & enter the cabin through the heater box. Reattach it afterwards, otherwise you'll invite mice through that the hole and they'll build a condo in your heater box...a rather smelly ordeal.

If the cowl drain is clear & the actual windshield cowl isn't rotted out under the glass (common in M3s, not so much in 325s/318s), there is a juncture below the cowl drain mentioned previously where the cowl & trans tunnel meet. The weld there often times rots through allowing the cowl drain to deposit water directly into the hole and into the cabin. If it's rusty you might be able to poke a screwdriver through it. If so poke out all the rust, clean it up & seal it.

Good luck,

Schneller

I appreciate the help, guys. I checked the drain, and sure enough, it was clogged up. Tomorrow, I'm going to take a water hose to it just to be sure that was the only problem, then put everything back together again. Hopefully, if anyone else has this problem, they will be able to find this thread and it will help them out too. Once again, thanks!
