probably a stupid question

I have been noticing for a while on my dash when I could start my car, that is, there are these little lights below the speedometer. there are 4 green 2 orange and 2 red I believe what are these and what do they mean. When I bought the vehicle there was all 4 green now When I try to start there are only 2 green. Any help thanks alot. Check my other post if any one knows how to help get the car started also. 1997 328is

The little lights are telling you how close you are to your next service - when all the green and yellow lights go out the red ones will stay lit to remind you it needs to be done.

If the service is done by a bmw dealer, they'll reset this each time, if it's done by someone else they may not have the tool to reset it, in which case you just learn to ignore the red lights....

Buy a Peake Research tool. It will reset the service lights as well as self diagnose any fault codes from your car. It is around $100.00 and well worth it. Good luck, K.

bear in mind there are no stupid questions except the ones not asked. what might seem stupid to you could very well be very pertinent to the next guy so don't belittle yourself or your ad by predicating it with that sort of tune-up. If you could read some of my posts.....but the good news is Jeron and a few others here really do want to help and so they will usually do their bmw best to find you the right answer. Just don't be a lame and you can get some great advice here.
