Schrich cam install

M20 engine (325is) just measured the cam position (lobe centerlines) and it is approx 6 degrees retarded.

Is this common? Seems a lot late to me.

Go to this article and post a comment down in the comments & suggestions section and ask your question. Nick might be able to give you some input: BMW E30/E36 Camshaft Timing and VANOS Unit Installation | 3-Series (1983-1999) | Pelican Parts DIY Maitenance Article

Thanks for your reply however the E30 isn't a vanos system.

Long story short....engine is on the stand,
1. found TDC and marked on timing belt cover and front damper,
2. installed cam gear at mark on head, crank at TDC.
3. measured cam at 6 degrees retard, based on lobe centerlines

That seems strange to me.

I simply advanced the cam gear one cog, i.e. 7.5 degrees which yields 1.5 degree advance. At little advance is my preference so it worked out. Just seemed a little strange.
