Timing belt tension

Hi, I undertook changing the timing belt, water pump etc. on my 90 325i myself. When I took the covers off, I saw there was no spring on the tensioner. The belt was tight etc, after looking over the situation and reading my 101 projects book, I concluded that the spring is for the initial tension only. When you let the spring put tension on, then tighten down the adjusting bolt the springs job is done. So since this belt has been on for over 70k I guess not having the spring there didn't hurt anything? Am I overlooking something? and should I order the spring etc. and put it on anyway? thanks, for the help.

You should replace the complete timing belt tensioner along with the spring and not just the spring.
