I Need Help urgently
My mechanic told me the edu or ecu is probably bad on my 1995 318i. I read here on this board I could probably change it out from a junkyard, is this true. And is it something I can change in my garage. I guess I need to know if it requires re-programming or if I can just change the chip out like in the article I read. or am I just up the creek.
Hope anyone can help SCinTexas |

I don't know of a car part called an EDU, so it must be the engine control unit (ECU), though that is not what BMW calls it. BMW calls it Digital Motor Electronics (DME)
What is the symptom? You can absolutely change the chip in the DME or the whole DME yourself with a junkyard part, but you have to be careful to get the correct part. I know nothing of 318s so all I can tell you is to do your research. If you are lucky enough to find one that is exactly the same part number, you can swap with confidence. At a minimum, get one from a car with the same type of tranny that you have (auto or manual). On the six cyl cars, I vaguely recall that there are two key digits in the part number that have to match when you swap units. |
