e30 Subframe removal
searched the forums and couldn't find an answer....so...
after putting it off long enough, i'm finally going to dive in and R+R the RTAB and RSFB. I know it can be done on the car, but i think it might be easier by removing the entire rear end. After dropping the exhaust, driveshaft and moving lines around, etc., from what i understand the only mounting points to the body are at the subframe mounts and bushes themselves. Is this correct? In theory, couldn't the entire rear end be dropped while assembled and rolled out on a jack? Has anybody done this? Any insight or better ideas would be appreciated. I don't have the bmw tool, but do have a pneumatic air hammer that i plan on taking some aggression out with when removing said bushings. thanks |

Yes, in theory that makes perfect sense, although the entire assembly would be unwieldy and difficult to work with. You'd have to disconnect the tops of the shocks, the brakes, the driveshaft, and the suspension attachment points. Don't forget the rear backup lamp sensor either, I once dropped the back to replace something and mine got hung on that...
