Timing Belt Catastrophe
Hi:
I just suffered the dreaded timing belt break, bent all 12 valves. The previous mechanic who had worked on the car, and who I purchased it from, had left a small bolt inside the timing belt cover which eventually jammed itself between the pulley and the belt. The mechanic we purchased the car from claimed to have rebuilt the head, all new drive train, one of the main reasons I purchased this E30 (I have this in writing). When my mechanic opened her up, we discovered worn valve guides, worn camshaft and rockers, which we replaced. My mechanic said from the dirt build up around the bolts and condition of the gasket, the head was never off. So, here is my question, in a typical head rebuild, is the head removed from the block and what parts are replaced if worn? Thanks for your help. I'm trying to understand how much I got shafted in purchasing a car with a supposed rebuilt head, not to mention the 2400 I spent due to the timing belt breaking.

If the valve guides were worn out, and gasket looked original, your head was never rebuilt.
Of course it has to come off to rebuilt it...
