Starter problem

Hi all,

I'm a newbie here. I own 318i with m40 engine (Malaysian market).
I have problem with the starter, i've already cleans all the parts but the problem still exist.
It's sometime crank & sometimes only the motor is turning and followed by knocking sound.

It seem like the fork is not pushing the one way gear to mesh with the flywheel gear.

Any idea?
Thanks in advance.

That sometimes happens with a weak battery. Does it behave the same way after the battery is charged, or if you put a jumper cable on from another car's battery?

I presume that you have cleaned the battery terminal posts and the grounds?

I don't think repair parts are sold retail for these starters. You just buy a rebuilt starter and turn in your old one so it can be rebuilt.

A rebuilt starter for a 318 is about US $140 on-line.
