Automatic Door/ Trunk Locks Stopped Working

How about this nice quizzer... The automatic lock system on my car (1995 325i Sedan) stopped working. Easy solution right- (check the fuses). Done.. Put in a new fuse and locks started working again- until.... I opened the trunk and then the fuse blew. Put in another fuse and then another and opened all the doors, played with locks and everything fine, until I opened the truck and fuse blew again and again. Any ideas? Should I change the trunk lock? wiring?
Thanks..

Probably not the trunk lock. More likely the wire cluster that goes next to the driver side trunk hinge.

One of the very few design flaws in the e36 was the engineer's failure to anticipate how many times some people might open and close their trunks in the life of the vehicle. They put standard multistrand wire in the trunk opening when they should have used ultrafine strand wire such as is used next to door hinges that are designed to flex thousands of times.

I suspect that if you open up that wire bundle, you will find wires that have broken or cut through their insulation and shorted out against one another. It is a common problem in e36s that were used by folks who carried stuff to work in their trunks and opened their trunks several times a day for several years.
