reading OBD1 challenge
Here is one... 88 325is... I was reading about checking the OBD1 codes by turning the key to the on position, pressing the gas pedal 5 times within 5 sec. and reading the check engine light. Well the check engine light stays lit when key is turned to the on position and turns off when the motor is running. So no codes appear. The one owner I bought this car from claims the check engine light and the anti lock light have been turning themselves on and off since the car was new for no apparent reason, even after repeated inspections by BMW. I have found this to be true, in addition, upon my initial test drive I discovered the antilock system was not working at all... hence the light.??.. that's another thing. The service indicator on the middle of the cluster has been disconnected or is no longer working...and... I removed the instrument cluster to inspect the odometer gears, the small one is broken, and I am 99% sure I connected the wires correctly. I like the idea of reading fault codes off the dash. Seems easy enough, no cost involved.. Anyone have any experience with this???

I continue to try and read codes each time before I start up. It seems to do something different after the car has been driven... I turn the key to on, push the pedal 5 times and the check engine light blinks twice before it stays on.

Well I am guessing due to the lack of response my little situation is not easily diagnosed. At this point I'm thinking anything goes in regards to the lights on my dash. I will probably purchase an R5 tool for diagnostic readings. I am really happy to have found this site. Pelican Parts people are very helpful and the participation by people in the forum is great! Tanks...

Not sure if this helps, but the Haynes Manual I have says that the gas pedal trick only works on '89 and later(it says 5 series but i think it also applies to 3's) I think i read something ether here or on the spece30 forum that it doesn't work on 88's. Hope thing helps. If I'm wrong please let me know. Something else you could try is disconnect your bat for 30min to clear the computer and try is again.
You should check out the spece30 page. Good luck. Kelly |
