Hesitation problem

On my 1988 325 I am having a hesitation problem. As I am driving (not always but most of the time more when the car is warmed up) and the RPM reaches around 2000 the car wants to stall and then it is fine then repeats every second. I am suspecting the fuel filter and planing to change that tomorrow . Could that be the problem?

Could be, but you may also want to look for air leaks.
The rubber intake elbow is a good place to start. They get cracks.

It could also be a worn out spot of the variable resistor inside the air flow meter. if no cracks are found, and the pressure is good, i'd try getting a used meter to swap with, also check the TPS on the throttle body. the switch is idle, cruise and full throttle positions, and if it intermitently cuts out it might act that way. but if its mostly upon cruising or mild acceleration i'd look to the AFM.
