Getting to a door lock

Heres the situation. Drivers side rear door cannot be opened (been like this since I bought it). Recently, ive started being adventurous and fixing things on my car and I wanted to tackle this. Inside door handle will not move and the lock will not move up or down.

The electronic lock has been shot and last time I brought it in, I asked for them to see if they could release the lock on the drivers door for me. They did, but the button still wont go up and down. But at least, I wont lock myself in my car, and my passanger side front door lock works. (although the door handle on the inside does not. It also is frozen, but at least the outside now works.

The rear passanger lock is like a manual lock. Both inside and outside handles work and the lock button moves up and down.

So I recently got brave enough to pull the door covers off and replace my drivers door handle thats needed it for about a year and thats when I realizied I may not be able to fix the rear door.

When I look at the article here on Pelican Parts
(http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/101-Projects-67-Doors/101-Projects-67-Doors.htm ) the photo shows it being totally open behind the foam covering. But mine is solid metal. For the front door, the bottom half is open so you can get to the window motor, but the upper half is solid. So I dont think I can get to the lock. The shop that worked on the lock last time had to use bolt cutters or something and cut a large peice of metal and bend it back to get to the lock.

Is there a way I can get to the lock that doesnt involve heavy tools? Or do I just deal with a door that will never open?

Is a 91 a E30 or an e36 body style?

I have replace window regulators on my E30s and It was fairly strait forward. With the window up and the plastic removed, you should have enough clearance to get to the lock actuator by reaching in under the window motor. If not you may have to remove the screw that holds the wimdow track, it is on the bottom of the door. You may have to remove the window regulator also. I does not require much more than a 10mm socket to remove almost everything on the door as far as I can remember. Maybe a torx bit or two.
If you can, reach inside the door and try to move the linkage manually.
