BMW Roundel Fuel guage calibration - '93 325i

Recently my 1993 325i fuel guage is no longer showing a full fuel tank after completing a fill up. The guage seems to track fuel consumption OK and the "Almost Empty" indicator still works fine. Its just that the needle pegs at about 3/4 tank, best case.

Question: Does anyone know if there is a procedure (mechanical or electronic) to recalibrate the fuel guage and/or sending unit so that (obviously) when the fuel tank is full the fuel guage reads full?

All suggestions are welcome.

I have done no work on the sending unit or the instrument cluster. The vehicle has 118,000 miles on it. I'm thinking that STEP 1 would be to pull the sending unit(s) and see if I can force the electrical signal to peg the guage to full by holding the mechanical portion of the sending unit (float?) in the full position.
