are there any special tools required when changing the timing belt, water pump thermostat etc, other than the normal spanners or sockets?.

His method for removing the fan does work, I've used it myself. This will save you money over the special tool people mention occasionally for removing the fan. Good luck, it's rather straight forward really, the only problems I encountered were removing the waterpump from the engine block, it was a bit stubborn.

I'm guessing it will be very similar for the 6 cyl models
