Most common e36 oil leak points?

Just put a valve cover gasket on my 'younger' '97 328 (140k mi).

My 'older' '97 328 (240k mi) has a bit of a valve cover leak, but it also has oil all around the VANOS actuator. The oil line to the VANOS is damp, and there is oil on top of the thermostat cover. The oil stain on the floor seems to be coming from the front of the engine.

I have the new valve cover gasket and gromets to put on it. Are there any O-rings or seals on the VANOS that I should go ahead and replace as routine maintence before I clean it up and study it further?

Manolito,

Take a good look at the back of the oil filter housing. There are two plugs next to the VANOS connection and the oil sensor. They will leak. I just went through it. I tried to repair it. Ended up buying the whole housing new.

$370. Ouch!

+1 on the Oil Filter housing - had to fix that leak (big one) last year. Also the timing chain tensioner seal has a tendency to leak oil down onto the A/C compressor - replacing the seal fixed that one. Rear main seal also - do that when you're replacing your clutch.

Now the oil pan gasket is starting to leak - dropping the pan is not any easy job on the E36 M3 as the engine has to be raised and suspended, while the suspension crossmember unbolted and lowered. I'll probably wait until I get access to a lift for this one. Hopefully this is the last of them - I do not like fluid leaks!!!

Oh yeah - I know it's not oil, but the infamous power steering lines will certainly be leaking if not replaced. Did those a couple of months ago.
