Vane/Cam Angle sensor?
 

hello all,
just got a horrible quote from a local dealership regarding the diagnostic done on my 1996 328is "check engine light". They claim that although not an active fault at this time, the Vane (I am not sure if that's exactly what I heard) has failed three times and will more than likely fail again. I believe it has to do with cam angle sensing and simply re-times the engine depending on conditions. I need help with regards to this fault. How common is it? is it hard to change and what it takes to do it myself. is $1800.00 a fair price? from what I understand, I would have to re-time the engine and as you well know, it isn't just re-gapping points like the old days.

I must have sounded really Dumb. It is the Vanos system that I was inquiring about,,,,,

I don't understand what you are asking. Does the car run? why did they run the diagnostic?
The Vanos system adjusts the timing by mechanically advancing and retarding the camshaft to change the valve timing verses tdc to adjust for various changes in driving conditions.
What is the car doing? other than a code?
