E36 steering Wheel swapabillty

Hello all,

I hate the steering wheel in my 97 M3,... feels like it came out of a camry. I'm interested in using a later model BMW wheel (such as E46, or E90). Just want a thick rim and 3 spokes. Would like to keep airbag if possible (otherwise I'd just go aftermarket)

1.) Will Later Wheel fit the shaft?
2.) Can the later model airbag be functional by splicing the cars SRS plug to match the later plug? I would'nt think the car would know the difference.
