Looking at M3's

So i've been looking at 90s model M3 convertibles, thinking about getting one.

What are these cars known for, are any models better than the rest, are any years considered 'avoidable'?

I don't know much about them other than i want one. Please help.

I'd avoid the convertible models. Coupe makes for a less flexing body.

Later the model...the better. 99 was the last year for the E36 M3 vert. Tops can be a bit problematic but nothing truly serious...just takes a bit of investigative work to generally source out the problem. Obviously being a convertible, it lacks some of the rigidity associated with the coupe or sedan but it's really only a couple notches down on the scale. Compared to most other 4 seater verts, it's about as stiff as they get. Cowl shake is surprisingly light. We have one in the stable and it's an enjoyable car...slightly muted in handling and a touch slower due to extra weight but still a blast to drive.

I'm not interested in racing it.

Do any of the moel years have problems more severe than the others? IOW, any specific 90s models to avoid?

The earlier years had some sub-frame and cooling issues...those were mostly corrected as the model aged. Also you will have the choice of selecting either OBD1 or OBD2 depending upon year (I believe the switch over was in 96). Slight motor changes though OBD1 allows for some better tuning performance so if your into upgrading the motor, OBD1 is more desirable though there's really not a lot of horsepower to be gained with either of these engines unless you go with forced induction (turbo or supercharger). Personally I'd stay with the latest model year you can find...either 98 or 99. Problems surrounding these cars are generally minor in nature barring any previous over heating issues. You will also notice that the majority of E36 M3convertibles will be automatics. It's a truly good trans but if your inclined to the manual trannie, there's no way an auto will suffice.

Thanks a lot for the detailed answer. I will try and follow your guidance if i do indeed end up buying an M3.

I'm going to be buying something of that ilk and era soon, and the M3 is one of my prime choices.
