Question M3 S52 crankshaft position sensor

This is the siemens P/N 12-14-1-709-616. I had my '96 M3 crap out on the road after I exited a freeway. My peake research tool scanned and said the DME threw
the '53' code which is crank position sensor. I reset and cranked with a new battery as I thought my battery was suspect - same thing.
My question - I pulled the crank sensor and according to the Bentley for my year - '96 rear crank sensor (under the starter) I should measure ~1280 ohms +/- 10%.
Well I pulled the part and it showed 'open' (OL) on my fluke 87 DMM.

I just received the new part from pelican and if it were not 105 degrees F outside I would have installed it - but my fluke shows the resistance between pin 1 and 2
at OL!!!! OPEN! Is this a bad part or what? I hope it does something different when I install it. I was wondering if anyone else had experience testing these sensors. Now I'm wonder if the original crank sensor was really bad ...??

TIA,

/Mike
