92 325i wont start

I'm thinking of buying this car depending on what the problem is and how difficult
it will be to fix. It doesn't start at the moment and I haven't had time to give it a thorough inspection, it turns over but not normally it makes an almost spinning sound quite fast. I'm assuming it's going to be one of the 3 timing chains and or belts. But I've heard other things about crankshaft position sensors causing problems. I'm just curious if there could be anything else causing this problem.
and if there is I would like some recommendations on what could fix this.

I would get a mechanic to do the inspection and check out.

If you are handy, do a compression test first on the engine. The engine spinning fast tells me it has no compression just like cranking with no spark plugs.

Then check for spark.

Lastly, check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail.

I would like to add to the above comment - It's depending on the price and condition such as, rust, dents, etc.

Otherwise, you can buy a running engine & tranny for about $500 or less and you can do your own mechanical work to save $$$. I have seen these complete motors for less than $500.

Hey thanks guys I got it started today, But no joy anyway it's got antifreeze in the oil and it's leaking bad from the oil filter (Easy fix) The owner is deciding what they want to do with it, and then I might take on the project lol again thanks for the ideas.

oh yea it's got a very slight knock too : ( I'm going to get some pics of the whole thing so you guys can see the condition. I would be grateful if you can give me an opinion of what to offer for it.
