The info from BMW says non-silicate, non-phosphate, and some sources say non-nitrate.
The only thing I found in the store that met those criteria was Prestone 5/50 long life. I tried that and I had a brand new Nissen radiator fail after only two years. Since then, I bite the bullet and buy BMW antifreeze. |

I have owned BMWs since forever, and run the wheels off of them. I stoped treating mine special years ago. I have used just about everything, mixed 50/50 with distilled water with very little problem. I have had 2 radiator failures in 29 years. One each on the two cars that I have kept. The two cars have a combined mileage of 810,000 miles (one had a forced retirement, the other still running on most days).
Water pumps are another story, I lost count, dozens. BMW water pumps cheeply made , fail often, but also cheep to buy and easy to change. But my cars are old like me, the newer ones may require special treatment these days. Give me an E30 any day.
