Tensioner Question
In the process of replacing belts, pulleys, and tensioner on '97 318i. After unbolting the idler tensioner pulley, it appears that I need to unbolt the alternator to remove this part. Is this right?

It is not necessary to remove alternator. The tensioner is held in place by two bolts opposite of each other. To access the one on the alternator side you may need to lock the tensioner by aligning the two holes of the assembly and sliding a pin (hex or small screw driver) through.

I've got the bolts out but tensioner is recessed and there's not enough clearance to pull it out. The "wheel" of the power steering pump prevents this from happening. It looks as it I need to loosen the alternator or remove the"wheel" of the power steering pump. ???

P/S pump pulley is easy enough, I'd for it if I have to choose between the two. On a second thought manual says you do have to remove the pulley.

I don't now about a 4 cylinder, but you have to unbolt the alternator on a six cylinder to remove the upper tensioner, the alternator is VERY easy to remove on a six. you don't have to remove the wires, just unbolt it and drop it out of the way.
