Anuy tricks or special considerations on replacing the battery on this car?

I know the convertible battery is special.

How about the radio code and other electronic considerations?

Thanks

I have a 1996 328i that I just replaced the battery on. The specifications for what type of battery to use are in your owners manual. I simply wrote mine down and went battery shopping. You can replace your battery with anything that meets or exceeds it. If your car is like mine, just don't forget you need top poles for connection and that your poles are probably reversed (+ furthest from you when standing behind car).

I purchase one of those red Optima batteries and it's been amazing. Starts my car better than my Bosch Premium did when it was new.

Convertible battery

Unfortunately this requires the convertible battery that is more shock proof.

Only from the dealer. $162.00, not to bad.

This battery is used as part of the vibration dampener, must be the battery trayor box that is the lever or dampener. Nothing special in contact to the battery.

You will need to know your radio code. If you got the manuals with your car, there is a business card sized card that has the radio code.

If you don't know your code, you will need to use jumper wires to keep the system powered from another battery while you change the battery, or you will have to pull your radio and give the serial number to the dealer to get your code. The service writer can punch it into his computer and get you the code, and should not charge you.

Pulling the radio requires a special 5-sided allan wrench. (screw behind little door on either side of display) You can buy them from BMW parts websites for about $20 or there used to be a guy making them and selling them on eBay for less than $10. Some have successfully gotten their radios out with other tools, depends on how tight the screws are.

Thanks...

Yes, when I picked up the battery from the BMW dealership the parts guy there gave me the run down on that process.

He said that a 2.5mm hex wrench would do the trick, the flaps and the hex head screw are both captive. When loose you slide your hand in tape cassette door and pull the radio out.

Take down all of the numbers to be sure you got the right one.

The battery had another wire coming off positive terminal. Any idea what that is for?

Also a blade fuse is in that same line?

Thanks

Found my radio code card!

Good thing also as the 2.5 mm hex wrench was not going to work on those captive set screws in the radio.
