DIY - Program factory remote fob for 97 M3 sedan

I'm installing a factory keyless/alarm system om my 97 M3 and ran into some problems programing the remote. I read multiple posts on the procedure and did not find the definitive answer in one place. Below is exactly what worked for me:

1. Close all doors, hood, and trunk from outside the vehicle. Key must NOT be in the ignition. Alarm must be in Disarmed mode.

2. Roll windows down and lock, then unlock doors.

3. Open the trunk and leave it opened.

4. Open drivers door, get into the drivers seat, then close the door.

5. Insert key and turn on/off 5 times very quickly (to position 2, don’t start engine). The Red LED on the console should come on solid and the siren should chirp once.

6. Remain seated and open then close the drivers door. Steps 1 - 6 must be completed within 45 seconds.

7. Push any button on the fob to have the system register the fob. The console LED should turn off momentarily.

8. Open the door and exit the vehicle, leaving the door open.

9. Close the trunk

10. Then close the drivers door from the outside

11. The siren will chirp twice and the LED will go off.

Good luck!
