Failed Fuel Pump

Hello,

My son was driving his 92' 325i (M50 engine) today and the car just died on him. He managed to get the car started, but did run very long before it quits. The car was running great prior to the fuel pump went out (I think). The car has about 167K miles on the very original fuel pump.

As for testing, I swapped out the fuel relay (orange) with another relay with the same ampres and that did not work. I popped up the rear seat so that I can press my ear close to the pump hoping to hear the pump pumps while my son turn on the ignition. At this point, I think the fuel pump is toast.

What do you guys suggests I do next or what test that I can do to isolate the failed fuel pump and where should I buy my next fuel pump??

Thank you in advance.

Jay

You could test the pump by bridging the FP relay at it's socket a wire between pin socket 30 (HOT: should have 12v) and 87 (path to FP). You could also, put 12v to each pin at the pump, disconnecting the leads to it before applying the voltage.

I'm not sure about the buy...Pelican, Autozone, NAPA??... It is most likely a standard Bosch part for different brands and models. Even a parts yard, if cost is an issue. I would bring jumpers to the yard and test the pump.

Sounds difficult!! With my luck these days, I might fried something else in the testing process. I am convinced that the fuel pump is bad since I was not able to hear anything from this pump when my son turned on the ignition key.

Thanks for your response though.

I was pretty certain that the fuel pump was bad and indeed it was the fuel pump all a long. I replaced the fuel pump and started right up without any trouble.

By the way, I got a brand new pump from Autohauz for $134.00 shipped.

Thanks guys!!
