convertible hood problems
Im having problems with my 1996 318 e36 convertible hood, when I go to open the hood the back makes a clunking sound as if it is trying to lift but there is not enough power to do it. The hood cover storage lid lifts fine but it is the hood itself. Ive had someone look at it supposedly but he said it was the hood mechanism which doesnt really help, im not sure if the bow rod arms need adjusting, does anyone know if I can do this manually or what could be causing the problem? All of the windows work fine and there are no other problems at all with the car it is just when I try to raise or lower the hood. It also works ok when I help it along a bit by lifting it slightly when someone else is pushing the button for me. Any Ideas I need help!!!!

Sounds like bow tension straps are no longer providing tension to pull the rear of the hood frame towards the front of the car. My 328iC does this also. If I have a helper push the rear of the convertible top frame towards the windshield while I am holding the button, the top opens all the way. It does not take much force to do this. Avoid having someone push really hard on the frame. If a lot of force is required to 'help' your top open, something else is wrong. Eventually, I will have the tension straps replaced.
