starter not working

do i need to replace just the starter or the starter motor and solenoid. when i turn the key it just grinds and wont turn over. any help??

I assume this is a BMW? Can you give us a little more?
If it is grinding, it is not the solenoid, even if it is a Ford. But depending on what ford, or BMW or Buick for that matter, could have a bearing on what you may need.
Be specific, give us all you can, there are no dumb questions.
Could be the flywheel, the bendix, (the gear on the end of the starter) or the starter is loose on it's mounts. Could be bad bearings in the starter.
