Hi All
I am a newcomer to this forum and am in the UK, and I would like to ask a question. I have just got a 1988 318i saloon, with 120K miles. It has a noisy rear diff, and I wondered about putting a thicker oil in to quieten it down? Any other useful suggestions (other than change the diff......) gratefully accepted. Many thanks Mark |

Have you checked the oil already? Level and quality? Try doing an oil change on it first. I guess these things are pretty hard wearing and when they start making a noise it can only be due to wear or damage. You should be able to find one in a scrapper or breaker and its not too hard to change over, just a bit messy and a good time to do the drive shaft boots too!

Are you sur it is diff? If the dif has oil they rarely fail.
It has a drive shaft center support bearing. Also wheel bearings make a rumbling sound when they go bad. You may try jacking it up on jack stands and run it. For safety sake, I usually take the rear wheels off, god forbid it falling off the stands, but if so, it wouldn't take off like a top fuel dragster.

These diffs whine all the time. You can use the redline 75w140 synthetic gear oil and it will help to some degree reduce noise. You will need 2 quarts. Change it no matter what, at 120k its more than due. Make sure you check out the driveling and wheel bearings as mentioned above. the handbrake is also a common noise maker.
