BMW Roundel Mr

I have a BMW 320i 1992 E30 sedan. The idling sometimes rises on its own as if the acclerator has been pressed. Then it drops and repeats. Now when you try to press the acclerator it stalls. It does not restart until several days have passed then the same thing happens.

What is wrong and how can it be fixed?

First thing to look for is air leaks. Check all the plastic and rubber parts from the mass air flow sensor to the throttle body. Check for air leaks in any of the vacuum hoses that attach to the intake manifold. Also, a leaking intake manifold gasket can lead to odd surges in idle speed as the fuel trim tries to compensate.

Check for leaks around the exhaust manifold too. You can suck in fresh air into the exhaust at idle. The oxygen hits the oxygen sensor which confuses the fuel trim and can mess with idle speed..
