I am about to embark on replacing the rear wheel bearings for my 1995 BMW 325is. Is there a special tool I will need to extract or insert the bearings? Also, I found a link to replacing wheel bearings for an E30 model but wanted to see if it closely mimics the steps for the E36. If there is a better link, please advise. Thanks.

A standard wheel puller should work, but good luck.
I live in Sacramento where rust is virtually unknown, yet I burned a bottle of propane and broke two wheel pullers trying to get the bearings out of the back of my '97. I gave up and took it to my favorite indy shop who handles all the jobs I cannot do (or mess up). He has a wheel puller powered by a jaws-of-life style portapower hydraulic pump. He had to lower the car so he could jump on the handle to get my bearings to pop loose. Interestingly, my mechanic pointed out that the small Mercedes uses exactly the same bearing as the e36. e36 rear wheel bearings last about 200k miles, yet he says he almost never replaces rear wheel bearings on the Mercedes. Must be a heat dissipation issue. |
