1996 BMW 328i e36 auto, 100k dealer serviced regularly. Trans pops in and out of gear at stop/starts as described in article. occurs in rev/fwd/all gear positions/both auto and man selections. checked and topped off fluid as per above, 1/2 quart low/no improvement. no cel however ecu
has o2 sensor fail logged and drivers rear outer wheel bearing howling. can fluid level sensor be metered while jacking vehicle to determine functionality?

I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say "fluid level sensor", I don't think these units have a fluid level sensor. It does sound like you might need a new transmission. However, I would just try overfilling it by about a 1/2 or full quart, just to see if that makes a difference. What could be the harm, I suppose, it does sound like it might be on its last legs right now...
