Got a 1984 318i. It wont start unless I give it 1/2 throttle or more while turning over the engine in which case it starts up fairly quickly. It will die when I let off the gas and there is no idle whatsoever. Also, occasionally when keeping the throttle steady around 2500 the car will randomly bog down unless I give it more gas. I'm hoping for just a vacuum issue.

Yes, this could be a vacuum issue, or it could be a clogged idle control valve. I would inspect the valve and clean it, and also check all of your hoses / boots for vacuum leaks.
