Engine code USB scan tool recomendations for a laptop?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a USB-based scan tool and software that works with Windows 7 and has good BMW specific code information?
I don't think my next laptop will have a serial port.
I don't use it enough to justify bluetooth, unless it doesn't cost much more.
I'd like to use it on the following:
- a 1997 328i with the old round connector
- a 2001 X-5 with the under-dash 16 pin connector
- and a 2005 M3

Or am I better off just getting a Peake R5/FCX-3-U that connects to both types of connectors?

The AutoEnginuity software is pretty good in my opinion, and it allows you to write to the DME as well (some others don't let you).
