Hi i have a 316i e36, and the fuel comp has dropped to ten miles to a gall, also noticed a strong smell of petrol in and around the car when first started, but this clears after about 10mins or so, and also noticed black on body work around exhaurst pipe at rear of car. I have checked it from one end of the fuel line to the other for a fuel leak, but there isnt one, any ideas please.

The car is obviously running very rich. I would make sure that you check the fuel injection error codes to see what the problem might be. You can find out how to do this in my article located here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/Mult-Code_Reading/Mult-Code_Reading.htm
