I use mobile 1 full synthetic 10w-40 in my 1997 E36 328i in San Diego Ca. Is this wrong?

Nope, that should work fine for you. In our very mild climate, nearly any weight / brand of oil will work perfectly fine. It's always pretty warm around here, and never too hot.
