Lousy gas mileage 95 E36 with 123000 miles

gang, have lousy gas mileage with my 1995 E36 325 automatic tranny. have new plugs, fuel filter, cleaned icv valve, and new O2 sensor along with entirely new suspension. only getting around 10- 15 in town and 25 on highway max.

i have new plugs, plug connector tubes and ignition coils arriving from Pelican today. installed new Bridgetone Pozenas yesterday with 4 wheel alignment that should help.

any other suggestions appreciated. thanks

I dont think tires or wheel alignment would do much for mpg.

Are you getting a CEL code?

Is the oil diluted with gas? Fuel pressure regulator could be culprit if its leaking from the vacume line back into the intake. Does it smell like gas?

Is it an auto of a manual? Could be slipping torque converter.

Could be the water temp sensor which is actually a de facto choke. Your car runs rich at start up and at a certain temp it leans out the fuel. Usually, you can do a self diagnos this by observing the exahsut pipe. Usually, at start up you will have a cloud of rich grey smoke which usually disappears when the engine reaching operating temp. If the exhaust is still rich after it's warmed up you have a bad sensor.

The mileage you are getting may not be out of line if you have a bit of a heavy foot. I only wish my wife got that with her 330. It would be nice if she got more than 25k miles out of a set of rear tires as well, but that is my cross to bear......

The other things to check with mysterious poor mileage are your thermostat and the water temperature sensor that supplies the temperature to the fuel injection. If your water is too cool, or the fuel injection system just thinks the water is too cool, the car will run rich and it may not set a code on an OBD I system. You need to use an IR thermometer to check the true water temperature as the temperature gauge in your dash cluster is not very informative. It tends to run dead center of its span over a wide range of actual water temperatures.

Thanks folks! i will check out the oil etc. also there are NO codes present. i will have a mech check out wa temp using an IR thermometer this week and report back the findings.Perhaps when i replace the plugs, connectors, and ignition coils things might improve.

I am also having the auto tranny diagnosed this week for possible slippage of the clutches and valves.
