E36 M3 coupe Amplifier location
Can someone tell me the location of the amp? I've looked around the car during several upgrades/repairs, but haven't seen one. I have the HK speakers and do have the factory CD changer in the trunk (missing the cartridge, unfortunately!)
My car is a 99 M3 coupe. Thanks! Chad

The amp is above the left rear wheel well.
To remove the lining from that side of the trunk, you have to lift it off the shock tower. To lift it off the shock tower, you first have to remove the left speaker in the rear deck. To remove the speaker, you have to pry up the grill on the rear deck. doing that without breaking off the snaps, when the plastic is over a decade old, takes a great deal of finesse. You might try sliding a clean wide putty knife under the grill to press the snaps a bit. The snaps are L-shaped and hook beneath the deck. The grill hooks at the front and snaps down at the sides and rear. If you are thinking of trying to repair your amp, I have one in my garage with only three of 12 channels still working that you can practice on. There is no other amp you can buy that will work without a major rework of your sound system. I got one from a junkyard that works. |

Thanks! I think mine is missing altogether. I had the panel out to replace the rear shock mounts and don't remember seeing it. I do remember seeing a pair of Infinity crossovers still wired into the stock system. Obviously they are sending the wrong frequencies to the HK's.
![]() I will double check. Maybe I just didn't see the amp and it's still there. Hopefully.

If you have Infinity crossovers back there, likely the amp failed (which they are prone to do) so someone put in the crossovers to split the frequencies in a manner similar to what the HK Amp did. That is hard to do really well, because on the front corner channels, the HK amp split the signal three ways, sending it to the sub in the kick panel, and to the midrange and the tweeter in the door. Crossovers that I found are designed only to split the signal into two frequency ranges.
What they did is about all you can do, however, if you don't want to invest in another HK amp and you don't feel like completely rewiring your car and replacing all the speakers. I opted for a junkyard HK amp. Much less work. |
